Good Hope Cafe Crowdfunder Campaign

Christmas is upon us and we know things can get tight around this time of year! Nevertheless, we thought it our duty to let you know about an honourable pledge campaign that one of our independent businesses on the card have set up in order to raise funds for.

The initiative being proposed is community led and is being set up to help bring something new and beneficial to the local area and community.

The Cafe of Good Hope was built in 2010 by charity organisation For Jimmy, as a way to help fund the work of their charity. The charity was set up by the Mizen family after the tragic murder of their son Jimmy in 2008, and has since been working relentlessly to help promote peace in communities all over London and the UK through a number of different projects and campaigns. You can explore the work of the charity here

In September this year, the Cafe suffered a serious flood which left it in disrepair and in need of a full revamp due to the damage. They have plans to restore the Cafe in the new year and create a better, more sustainable design for the future, making it a strong community hub for the people of Lewisham.

The Cafe has been a staple feature of the Charity’s work, having employed many young people through training and apprenticeship schemes. It supports families and friends and hosts events to raise money for the charity to fund other peace projects. One of the cafe’s standout features has been their partnership with Drumbeat School and ASD Services to provide personalised placements for young people with Autism, enabling them to experience the workplace and acquire a range of essential skills. The team at For Jimmy stated of this initiative:

“This work has family significance too as our sister and daughter Sammy Mizen has Downs Syndrome. Before Jimmy died we actually wanted to open a café in Ladywell, to provide a space for young people with special needs and their parents. We’ve now come full circle, being able to offer those opportunities to Drumbeat pupils.”

The Good Hope Cafe is one of our Businesses involved on the Lewisham Card scheme and we are proud to support their great work over the years. To get full information on their campaign and to pledge, click here.

If you know of any other promising looking campaigns going on around Lewisham by local businesses or otherwise, please let us know and we’ll try and promote it! :)
