I will admit I have followed The Royal Standard pub on Instagram for a little while, enjoying their updates on the refurbishment and relaunch of Deptford’s latest watering hole. Having never visited prior to this evening, it will be difficult for me to paint a clear picture on exactly what has changed but I can certainly confirm that this pub has a lot to offer our local community here in Deptford and our borough of Lewisham. An incredible amount of effort has clearly gone into this refurbishment and it is a venue the whole team should feel very proud to work in - clean, modern and furnished to a high standard but still creating a relaxed and chilled vibe.
The pub specialises in local craft beers and ales only- no Stella, no Heineken and NO FOSTERS. Their partnership with Meantime brewery creates a feeling of community, and complimented by Brockley brewery and Beavertown, their on tap beer selection is selective and unique. Their wine list is lengthy and offers a great range of different blends for any budding wine connoisseurs, and is served in modern and beautiful glassware. I opted for a pint of American Pale Ale: the eccentrically titled “Gamma Ray”, from north London’s Beaverton brewery, while I deliberated over their incredibly creative and ambitious menu.
In the end I had to ask their lovely manager on duty for some advice and help with my ordering! Look at the menu for yourself- it’s all incredibly competitive and took me a while to make a decision. In the end it’s always best to trust the instinct of those who serve it every day!
At a first look over the menu I couldn't help but feel an anticipation. For a vibe that feels very “modern british pub” the menu is distinct and ambitious. With recommendations we ordered the following: To start: Lamb Croquette with red wine sauce, and Chargrilled Squid & Chorizo with Coriander and Chilli salad, and for our main; Beer Battered Fish and Chips and the Homemade Cheeseburger.
The Squid and Chorizo salad is a hugely generous portion (could easily substitute as a light lunch or even as a main for dinner with one of their sides) and it’s beautifully presented. The Squid was cooked to perfection, not one cut of it chewy, and was complimented beautifully by the heat of the chorizo and chilli. The Lamb croquette however stole the show, even more so than our mains. Here’s why: picture in your mind your basic croquette - soft potato with a lightly fried crunchy exterior. Now imagine 99% of that soft potato was slow cooked with tender lamb. Standard Potato croquettes are now dead to me...
I couldn't help but actually start to feel full after the starters, (again 10/10 for generous portion size) but when my burger arrived all of that fullness seemed to disappear…how strange. Before we get into detail about the intensity of their beef burger there is something more important to divulge…minted mushy peas. A side to the fish and chips, they were so fresh and well seasoned that my guest for the evening barely let me try them. I was, however, granted permission to try the fish, which was cooked fresh, and battered to crispy perfection. They did incredibly well to smarten up much-loved “pub grub” classic...
My choice, the burger, was served open on the advice of the staff, and although looked small was still incredibly filling and satisfying. Cooked medium, the patty with melted cheddar cheese was served with fresh tomato, baby gem and gherkins on a fresh bun with a kick of sweet chilli mayo. A great burger and certainly one to try when visiting this pub.
Last but not least, the hand cut chips that accompanied the burger were simply something else. Skin on, crispy but fluffy inside, well seasoned and a generous portion made both mains complete. They could have been a meal on their own. Im serious, if your going to have to one thing just order the chips, you won’t be disappointed!
The Royal Standard pub has only been open four weeks and already is making a solid impact on our local community. The pub is already host to live music and spoken word events, showcasing the talent and passion in our borough. Please support this local business in their solid and genuine efforts to transform and improve the Deptford scene. The food is excellent, the service friendly, and the venue and their events will have a real impact on exposing the culture and diversity of this wonderful part of our capital.
