This Saturday marks For Jimmy’s third Sparkle event taking place on Ladywell Fields. This is the next social event in For Jimmy’s calendar since their 21 Bridges on 2nd July (donations are still being accepted). The charity has hosted 3 successful Sparkle festivals so far, involving music, food stalls, children's activities and more. For food, the Birds Nest will be providing their famed finger-licking burgers; Star Jerk hut from Deptford high street will be hosting a smokey grill full of delicious jerk chicken, and Ten Thousand Hands will be providing the pick-me-up coffees and sandwiches. Various crafts and makers will be occupying stalls, including ourselves, and The Birds Nest's festival bar will be serving beers and drinks. The event is named after Jimmy Mizen, who was tragically murdered at the age of 16. He was known as a boy that sparkled, and the first event that the Mizen family held after his death was called Sparkle - a music event at the Astoria.
Sponsored by Sebastian Roche Estate Agents and ourselves, the event will be running from midday and will be providing entertainment from the get go. The NHS choir for Lewisham and Greenwich are performing at the event, who, having recently performed at Glastonbury, have become a nationwide hit following their success in reaching the Christmas no.1 spot above Justin Bieber. Expect searing harmonies and heartfelt renditions of classic pop tunes from this passionate ensemble. More acts will be filling the stage throughout the day.
Lewisham 3 Peaks Challenge
Running simultaneously to Sparkle, the ‘Lewisham 3 peaks challenge’ will be occurring across the borough at 3 of the tallest public spaces in Lewisham: Hilly Fields, One Tree Hill, and Blythe Hill Fields. This brilliantly devised walk covers all 3 of these peaks and also the valley of the River Ravensbourne. So any keen walkers who fancy undertaking this challenge, the party will be setting off at 11am from Hilly Fields by the Stone Circle. Check out the epic map that Guardian cartoonist Martin Rowson has devised for the event below. Proceeds for this sponsored walk go to For Jimmy and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.
With the successful walkers returning to celebrate at Sparkle, the festival will be rounded off with Margaret and Barry Mizen, the figureheads of For Jimmy, speaking alongside other notable civic leader from the borough. You can keep up with the Sparkle facebook event here.
