The Birds Nest pub in Deptford is a Lewisham institution. Positioned between a roundabout and a yard, on the corner of the Deptford Greenwich border, the pub is famed for hosting live music five nights a week - everything from Dire Straits playing there back in the day to chilled reggae vibes on a Sunday afternoon. You can even try your hand yourself on the Wednesday open mic night or get on down to their monthly hip hop night if that’s more of your thing. From 25-29 August the pub will play home to 'Nestival' - a festival in collaboration with nearby record store and cafe, Vinyl Deptford, that'll showcase the likes of local girl Kate Tempest, psychedelic artist Zubzub (Zia Geelani of Ozric Tentacles) to alt-rock Londoners The Cortege.
Being one of the best music venues in the borough doesn’t stop The Birds Nest excelling in all other decent pub offerings – food, drink and ideally sunshine (on the days that the weather is more favourable at least). The Birds Nest serves up traditional grub at exceptionally good prices - their Sunday roasts in particular should not be missed. Two vegan options - an inventive seitan roast stuffed with leeks and mushroom or a 'chicken' pie with cashew cream - proudly sit alongside the usual offering of chicken, lamb, beef, pork and nut roasts. Veggies and vegans don’t need to stop there – all of the meat burger options, over 20 of them, can be made veggie or vegan but subbing in a 'mockery burger' - that's mock beef or chicken to the uninitiated or stick to good old falafel if that’s just too cray for you. Plus other pub grub stalwarts such as whitebait, nachos and a killer all day breakfast meaning you'll want to eat here every night!
From Monday to Friday the pub offers almost unheard happy hour deals with £2.50 drinks and there’s a great selection of local and international beers, ales and cider on offer, as well as beers, spirits and soft drinks.
The Birds Nest is easily one of those pubs that you can while away a whole weekend in (take it from someone who has tried) but it never gets dull. The staff and the punters are friendly and interesting - where else can you chat to a local snake breeder or watch an arty hipster paint Barbie’s faces green? The beer garden is a perfect sun trap meaning you can still replenish your Vitamin D levels whilst basking in the general glory of knowing you’ve hit upon one of London’s finest pubs. And if you find yourself really never wanting to leave there's a hostel upstairs which takes weekly bookings. There's not many pubs left like The Birds Nest in London so let's hope that local developers don't get their hands on this prime corner of Creekside that is south east London through and through.
