The Village Deli, nestled right next to Blackheath station and a short stroll down from the heath, is both easy to find and a great spot to grab a relaxed breakfast or lunch. A family run business for the past 30 years, it has grown from a small delicatessen serving only freshly made sandwiches to a bustling café with a menu that takes up at least 3 of its 4 walls. Yet this transformation hasn’t come at the cost of any of its old charm and it still boasts an impressive display cabinet filled with salads, cheeses, pastries and cakes plus a whole wall of tempting international produce. With so many years in business under its belt the Deli has accrued its fair share of devoted locals. Yet its central location - next door to the farmers market that happens every Sunday - and traditional personality see it gain heavy footfall especially over the weekend.
Visiting on a sunny morning, it was prime time to take advantage of The Deli’s outdoor seating, which runs along its southwest facing side. Partitioned off from the main road it is the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and soak up any or all of the rays of sunshine on offer, whilst watching the world pass. Don’t worry though there is plenty of indoor seating as well for the brisker days in our English summer. The breakfast menu is vast, taking up a wall of its own, ranging from American pancakes to Eggs Royale to a classic English breakfast. All bases are successfully covered.
Settling on the ‘Vegetarian’ and ‘Hearty’ breakfasts we were met with plates a brimming. The Vegetarian came with poached eggs, mushrooms, hash browns, tomatoes, vegetarian sausages, beans, toast and a coffee all for £7.50. Hard to even say in one sentence, its contents were an even larger feat for the stomach. Yet it was too good to waste. The ‘Hearty’ was similarly an impressive spread with bacon, black pudding, eggs, tomatoes and toast all for £7.25. To say a hole was filled would be an understatement; you can’t help but waddle away in the sunshine either satisfied or stuffed...
With an equally hefty lunch selection of filled Bagels, wraps, a whole host of sandwiches and other mains, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The endearing staff will be sure to look after you, and their large portions of food at such good value makes a trip to the Village Deli a great way to see in any day. Soak up the rays and tuck into a hearty plate of food whilst supporting a great local business!
